Here's what nobody tells you about authenticity at work: pretending is expensive. It drains energy, reads as inconsistency, and quietly erodes the trust that promotions are built on.
Being your authentic self — deliberately — does the opposite. Here's what that looks like in practice:
Know yourself
Authenticity starts with knowing your values, strengths, and limits. Most of us go years without pausing to check. Try: write down your top values and how they show up in your work; journal 15 minutes on what you believe and why; ask a trusted colleague where your actions and values align — and where they don't.
Be consistent
Authenticity isn't something you switch on for the right audience. Be the same person in every room. Under pressure, breathe, then respond with integrity. Say no to things that violate your values — boundaries protect authenticity. Consistency is what turns "genuine" into "trusted."
Embrace vulnerability
For years I thought I had to hide my weaknesses to succeed. When I started admitting what I didn't know and asking for help, something unexpected happened: trust went up — and my career took off.
Model it: admit when you don't have the answer. Share a failure and its lesson in a team meeting. Ask your team, "What could I do differently to support you better?"
People trust leaders who are real. And trust is the currency every promotion is paid in.
